Sleep Apnea

Imagine driving down the expressway, on your way home from work, after picking up your daughter from daycare, and then waking up in the middle of a ditch? This happened to a relative of mine who didn't know he was suffering from sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a condition where an individual is unable to breath normally during sleep. Often these individuals stop breathing and they experience a low quality of sleep. Most people do not even realize they are having this problem until they see a doctor or their partner tells them. As you can imagine, it is very dangerous to stop breathing multiple times while you sleep. The brain isn't being supplied oxygen at these times and one could die.

My relative was falling asleep uncontrollably, especially toward the end of the day. An individual with sleep apnea would experience tiredness through out the day, depression and attention problems. Like I mentioned earlier, there is a lack of oxygen supply to the brain and this impairs memory function.  He had been feeling tired for quite sometime, but attributed it to working overtime. Family members expressed concern and begged him to go to the doctor. He agreed and figured the doctors would tell him to get some real rest, but instead had him schedule an appointment for a sleep study. He was diagnosed with sleep apnea. Now, every night he has to sleep with a mask on. The mask is loud but is less expensive than surgery. The mask makes sure he is getting enough oxygen and he describes feeling rejuvenated and more rested than ever before.

The following site tells you who is at risk and has a link of treatment. Sleep Apnea
The important thing to notice is the real risk of sleep apnea. My relative didn't know how long he had been undiagnosed but he says he is glad he sought medical advice before someone or himself got hurt. He had 3 other accidents before this incident, but he didn't recall sleeping, just spacing or blacking out momentarily. Hope you found this topic interesting, see you next week.

My grandma uses a sleep mask as well when she goes to sleep, im not sure if she has this problem(sleep apnea), but i know that she does use it at night. It always made me think why she would use it but i never bothered in asking her why, now i think it may be for that.

wow crazy, my parents use to tell me that I had sleep Apnea when I was a baby and as a kid growing up. They use to tell me that when I would fall asleep they would have to constantly keep me under supervision because I would either forget to breathe or wake up gasping for air.
I think it is a serious condition, and it starts to make me wonder if everyone should just get checked out for it just in case.

When I was in high school, there was a teacher that had sleep apnea. They would say that he would be at his desk and then just fall asleep. I think that it is crazy because it affects your life. The students would make fun of him and Im sure he would probably get into trouble too.
